Every interaction between a collector and a consumer is an exchange of information, regardless of whether a debt is repaid or not. Collectors must be great listeners in order to connect with consumers, but they also have to be great interviewers, able to extract information about whether a consumer is who he/she says he/she is and whether they intend to pay a debt or not.
