Credit One Bank to Pay $10.2 Million to Settle California Collection Harassment Claims

  • Credit One Bank has agreed to pay more than $10 million to resolve a civil consumer protection lawsuit brought by a coalition of California district attorneys who alleged the bank and its collection vendors made repeated, intrusive, and harassing phone calls to consumers in connection with overdue credit card accounts. The judgment was entered on February 19, 2026, in Riverside County Superior Court and was announced publicly by district attorneys from Los Angeles, Riverside, San Diego, and Santa Clara counties.

Vermont Supreme Court Rejects FDCPA Claim in Credit Card Collection Case

Lawmakers Reintroduce Patient Debt Relief Act, Targeting Medical Debt Collections, Wage Garnishment

  • A group of lawmakers earlier this month reintroduced the Patient Debt Relief Act, proposing new federal protections for consumers facing medical debt, including limits on wage garnishment and home foreclosures, new repayment requirements for hospitals, and a grant program to purchase and retire qualifying medical debt. The bill, led by Rep. Gabe Vasquez [D-N.M.] and joined by Rep. Angie Craig [D-Minn.] and more than a dozen co-sponsors, comes as lawmakers point to rising medical costs and coverage changes that are pushing more consumers into collections.
